gas

Do you have any idea how much gas costs in California right now? I paid $2.49 a gallon (cheap stuff was $2.39, I accidentally bought the mid-grade) at a Shell right off I-80 last night. That's expensive even for the bay area, but I needed gas. Anyway, it's making my commute-heavy lifesystle expensive. What a bummer.

cheapest around here lately is $1.510, though I couldn't get lower than $1.550 last week. Of course, this is southern NJ where it's all cheap and all full serve only. When I moved down here last June I was paying $1.200.

Back then, taking the train to work would have only saved me about 25 cents/day, or $56/yr, not worth it for the convenience factor. Now taking the train would save more like 85 cents/day, or $191/yr... might start to become worth it because I'm more of a cheap NJ jew than a hasty california yuppie. And with the money I save, I could visit california and be a cheap california jew. Plus added time on my bike each day. wahoo.

My dad said he saw some documentary the other day that said that 90% of gasoline is sold as a commodity and all the different carriers tap into the same boat/pipe, then add their own additives (tar, menthol, pcp). Makes you wonder why the Citgo is 10% cheaper than the Shell right across the street, and why people go to the shell.

Ack. I'm toying with the idea of taking the train, but...

  • Takes 2.5-3 hours each way (compared to 45-60 minutes)
  • Costs about $8 a day
  • Gotta wakeup around 6:30 to make it to work at 9:45

yup.

Buy gas in the ghetto. 'S cheaper. Still not exactly cheap though. I try to think of gas and rent prices as the price I pay for living in a civilized city. If I want cheap rent, I can always move to Cincinnati!
